Ken would also be pleased to hear from anyone who would like to assist with updating the website. It would be particularly useful if people would like to take responsibility for reporting regularly on a Church activity, which normally means updating one of the pages. |

Hopezone offers after school activities to young people. It is run by the Baptist and Methodist churches, with support from the other Churches in Crowthorne. The autumn term is about to start and there is a need for further volunteers. Hopezone operates out of the Baptist Church on Wednesday afternoons, in two shifts, from 2:45pm until 6pm, and from 5:30pm until 8pm. There are refreshments and computer games available for the youngsters. The next term runs from 8th September until 15th December. There is a meeting of exisiting and potential new volunteers at 8pm on Wednesday 1st september at the Baptist Church. Please let Ken Perrett know if you are interested and would like to come along. The current arrangement at the Baptist Church is temporary - we are working towards finding somewhere nearer to the Recreation Ground where the youngsters can meet. Ken Perrett 01344 773808 |

Ride and Stride - September 11th |
|
Ride + Stride (formerly known as CRoW in Berkshire) is one of the most successful and popular annual fundraising events that help restore and protect historic churches and chapels across the UK.
Nationally, in 2009, over 13,000 cyclists and walkers took part raising over £1.5 million. Last year in Berkshire some 300 cyclists and walkers raised over £20,000, half of which went to participants’ nominated churches and half to help the Trust’s efforts in renovating and restoring the churches of Berkshire This year around 10,000 churches will open their doors for visitors. Churches are steeped in history and many will be manned by local people willing to describe the features of their church. Many will also offer refreshments for those tired legs!
Participants are free to tailor their own route making the event ideal for riders and walkers of all levels of experience.
We are deeply indebted to Daphne Barnes-Phillips, Berkshire’s coordinator of Cycle Run or Walk for many years, who has kindly donated a cup to be awarded to the highest achieving church in the county. The Daphne Barnes Phillips cup will be awarded to the team from St Mary’s, Sulhamstead Abbots who last year raised the magnificent total of £1675.85 in sponsorship of their CRoW participants. Can this be beaten in 2010?
In 2010 Ride + Stride will take place on Saturday 11th September - to participate contact Guy Lean (311404) who will provide you with sponsorship forms and details of the churches in Berkshire. Guy is also organising the opening of St John’s and the provision of refreshments (offers of help welcome).
Then just make sure you ask your family and friends to sponsor you.
Take part and have some fun for this great cause!

The weekly prayer group for the work of the Parish is now meeting at 6.15pm in the Lady Chapel. We recognise that not everybody will be able to make this time, however you can still participate. Attached to the back of SJN are suggested daily prayer intentions for March and some prayers that might be used. |

Roof finished in record time and at a very high standard |
|
We reached a very proud moment on Tuesday morning 24th August 2010, when Laszlo and I met with Alan Burden the Architect and Paul Sweeting from Traditional Leadwork and Roofing Ltd. We have now officially reached a stage of ‘Practical Completion’ on the roofing project!!
What this means, (apologies to those of you that understand all of this jargon) is that our Architect, the contractor and us as clients, have agreed that the re-roofing of St. John’s, has been carried out properly, in budget and to a very high standard of workmanship. We have also received all the necessary certification and Health & Safety documentation.
What follows now is a period of six months where the roof is left to settle down, this is called the defects liability period. After this six months period has elapsed, the final percentage of money is released to the contractor, assuming we find no defects within that time and that is the full completion of the re-roofing works to the main historic part of our incredible church building over. I can’t wait for the celebratory service to mark this event on Sunday 17th Oct at 6 pm. I attach these 2 photos as start and finishing pictures of the work carried out. I don’t know about you, but we on the fabric committee are so pleased not to see running water cascading down the inside of the building anymore! We still have the bell pull mechanism to sort out and we are very lucky to have Lewis and the rest of the Fabric team, trying to get this fairly technical and fiddly piece of work resolved. Many local and major contractors no longer have the skills or expertise to mend this type of historic, bell pull system, don’t worry Steve it wasn’t your fault and ‘Bell Pull Mark 2’ is underway!!

Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo |
|
To celebrate the completion of our new roof, we are planning a production of ‘Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo’ by Michael Flanders and Joseph Horovitz. This will mostly involve the young people, however . . . . . . if you fancy singing ‘God’ or ‘Noah’ talk to Tom – it will be good to hear some other people sing: Forty days and nights living under hatches. Careful with the lights! Feed the beasts in batches! And I can’t hear them roar as they’re waiting to be fed, For the rain’s steady drumming on the roof above my head, The raindrops drumming overhead! We are hoping to stage this jolly cantata in October when we have a thanksgiving service for the new roof. All hands on deck then! |
|
The work on the roof has been completed ahead of schedule. The scaffolding is down and the church is back to normal. Thanks to Paul Sweeting for the great work and to Alan Burden our architect for overseeing the work. Thanks also to Laszlo Gyenes and Mike Thackray who have worked tirelessly towards the successful completion of the project. |
