  • Galatians 3:24-26
So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.

Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo

To celebrate the completion of our new roof, we are planning a production of ‘Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo’ by Michael Flanders and Joseph Horovitz.  This will mostly involve the young people, however . . . . .  . if you fancy singing ‘God’ or ‘Noah’ talk to Tom – it will be good to hear some other people sing:

Forty days and nights living under hatches.

Careful with the lights!

Feed the beasts in batches!

And I can’t hear them roar as they’re

 waiting to be fed,

For the rain’s steady drumming on the roof

 above my head,

The raindrops drumming overhead!

We are hoping to stage this jolly cantata in October when we have a thanksgiving service for the new roof.

All hands on deck then!

Please speak to Tom Shorter or Maggie Wade if you want to be involved.

Ride and Stride - September 11th

Ride + Stride (formerly known as CRoW in Berkshire) is one of the most successful and popular annual fundraising events that help restore and protect historic churches and chapels across the UK.

Nationally, in 2009, over 13,000 cyclists and walkers took part raising over £1.5 million.  Last year in Berkshire some 300 cyclists and walkers raised over £20,000, half of which went to participants’ nominated churches and half to help the Trust’s efforts in renovating and restoring the churches of Berkshire This year around 10,000 churches will open their doors for visitors.  Churches are steeped in history and many will be manned by local people willing to describe the features of their church.  Many will also offer refreshments for those tired legs!

Participants are free to tailor their own route making the event ideal for riders and walkers of all levels of experience.

We are deeply indebted to Daphne Barnes-Phillips, Berkshire’s coordinator of  Cycle Run or Walk for many years, who has kindly donated a cup to be awarded to the highest achieving church in the county.  The Daphne Barnes Phillips cup will be awarded to the team from St Mary’s, Sulhamstead Abbots who last year raised the magnificent total of £1675.85 in sponsorship of their CRoW participants.  Can this be beaten in 2010?

In 2010 Ride + Stride will take place on Saturday 11th September - to participate contact Guy Lean (311404) who will provide you with sponsorship forms and details of the churches in Berkshire.  Guy is also organising the opening of St John’s and the provision of refreshments (offers of help welcome).

Then just make sure you ask your family and friends to sponsor you.

Take part and have some fun for this great cause!
