So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.

Caring for our Community

Part of the St John's vision statement reads: "We partner with other organizations in order to meet the needs of our community through loving service." One such opportunity has arisen through the Bracknell Forest Befriending Scheme which aims to reach out to those in our community who feel isolated - simple regular human contact can make some people feel like their lives are worth living again. Perhaps God is nudging you be involved in this ministry? Read on....

Everyone needs other people, but not everyone has someone.

People can be isolated or feel alone for all sorts of reasons –health problems, people living alone having lost loved ones and with families living some distance away, be homebound or have other circumstances which make opportunities for developing friendship difficult. Sometimes people feel alone even when they are in regular contact with others.

Befriending is simply a supported friendship between two people, a volunteer befriender and a member of the local community who feels isolated or alone, and is the simple act of giving your time to someone who needs support and friendship. Someone they know is there for them without expecting payment or a return of favour.

This is also of benefit to a potential befriender, who might also be lonely and in need of company, but who is perhaps more active and able and can therefore help someone else less mobile than themselves.

We have all been befrienders at some time in our life on an informal level, eg keeping an eye on an elderly relative, popping in to see a lonely neighbour, etc.

This project aims to match volunteer befrienders with socially isolated people to provide both one to one contact and also encourage people, through increased confidence, to participate in community activities.

The scheme is run through Bracknell Forest Voluntary Action (BFVA) with a part time Befriending Coordinator, who will support volunteers through training, advice and guidance, and then match up befrienders with ‘clients’ which are referred through statutory agencies, churches, other groups or indeed through self referral.

Spring Concert, March 27th

Spring Concert, March 27th

The Crowthorne Symphony Orchestra's Spring Concert on Saturday March 27th promises a varied programme, conducted by Robert Roscoe. Malcolm Arnold's Little Suite No 1 will be followed by Chabrier's exuberant Espana, Max Bruch's haunting Kol Nidrei for solo cello and orchestra, and finally Tchaikovsky's eternally popular Symphony No 5 in E minor. We're delighted to welcome soloist Jennie Brown in her first concert with the orchestra. Jennie is an exceptionally talented young cellist who started playing at the age of 9 through the Berkshire Young Musicians Trust, and is currently studying for her Masters at the Royal Academy of Music, supported in part by the Crowthorne Trust.

Tickets for the concert are available at £8 in advance, £10 on the door (free admission for age 16 and under). Advance tickets can be purchased from members of the orchestra, by calling us on 0118 972 2164, from Traveltime travel agents office in the High Street, Crowthorne or online (where a 10% commission will be charged).

Orchestra Workshop Dates Announced

Orchestra Workshop Dates Announced

Details for the next Crowthorne Symphony Orchestra Open Workshop, and the second of our String Workshops have been announced - come and join us! The Open Workshop - now in its 8th year - will take place on Sunday September 12th, so please save the date. The work will be announced soon, but as before it'll be an interesting piece that most people won't normally get the oppportuity to play. After the success of last year's String Workshop, our second will be on Saturday 15th May from 2.30-5.30 and the works will include Grieg's Holberg Suite and movements from Serenade for Strings by Joseph Suk (written when he was 19). Both Workshops will be conducted by Robert Roscoe. See our website for venue details, and please email us  if you'd like more information or to book a place.

Questionnaire Results

Many thanks to everyone from the Christmas concert who filled out our questionnaire - we've analysed the results which will be extremely helpful to us in planning our programmes and publicity. While our banner, website and articles in local papers attracted attention, unsurprisingly by far the most effective method of letting people know about our concerts is word of mouth, so do please continue to tell friends and family about our programme (or forward this newsletter !). To focus our publicity it was useful to learn that most of our audience are local, with nearly three quarters living within 10 miles - although others came from London, Andover, Brize Norton, Coventry, the Isle of Wight, Staffordshire and (probably not just for the concert) Thailand! We very much appreciated the positive feedback too: "Very enjoyable", "Nicely balanced prog", "Excellent choice of programme and soloist likewise. I will be attending throughout the year". Comments are always welcomed - please email us!
