Helen and Douglas House

I apologise to members of St John’s who already know about Helen and Douglas House, but this article is to provide information about the work of this very special hospice in Oxford. Later, in the year, on November 24th 2013, we will have a speaker from Helen and Douglas House at our Sunday service. You will be able to hear about the marvellous work and amazing people that enter the hospices.

It was 30 years ago that Helen House the world's first children's hospice, opened in November 1982. It sprang from the friendship between Sister Frances Dominica and the parents of a seriously ill little girl called Helen who lived at home with her family but required 24 hour care.

Helen’s family’s experience highlighted the need for respite care and support for children with life-shortening conditions. The care Helen House provides is modelled on that provided in the family home - personalised and tailored to individual needs. The emphasis is on affording the children and families who stay there sensitivity and dignity as well as making the most of life, whatever the circumstances.

Leprosy Mission International

In 2013 The Leprosy Mission will have been in existence for 139 years. Beginning in an Anglican Church prayer meeting in Dublin it is now an international Christian medical and development organisation working in 30 of the world’s poorest countries.

The past few years have been very challenging for The Mission but they have made every effort to continue ministering in Jesus’ name to those who need us and to meet our commitments effectively wherever required.

The Children's Society

The Children’s Society is one of a number of organisations supported by our church. Money is raised for the Children’s Society here at St John’s in a number of ways:

  • Through the annual Christingle Service
  • The sale of Christmas Cards
  • Distribution of collection boxes amongst the congregation
  • Community collection boxes (ie in shops etc)
  • Ad-hoc fundraising activities

The Children's Society wants to create a society where children and young people are valued, respected and happy. We at St John’s totally endorse this vision and are therefore keen to do all we can to continue to support their wonderful work.

Bible Society

The Bible Society is one of the missions that we support at St. John’s and this year, it is focussing its fundraising on CAMBODIA.

Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in Asia and 38% of the population live on less than £1 a day.  Many families live in extreme poverty and in some villages, 90% of the people are illiterate.  Overall, about 25% of the population are unable to read or write.

Cambodians suffered during the Vietnam War and also under the Khmer Rouge, when about 2 million people (especially the educated ones) were killed.  Approximately a quarter of the population died during this time.  Many schools were destroyed.

20 Years ago, there were approximately 5 000 Christians in Cambodia and now that figure stands at about 250 000!  The Bible Society is running literacy classes alongside Bible distribution to help lift the people out of poverty.    The people are learning to trust in God’s faithfulness and they hope for a brighter future.

Please pray for the expansion of bible distribution, literacy programmes and for the safety of the growing team of Bible Society workers as they go about their important work in Cambodia.

Jennifer Sanders,

Bible Society Representative at St. John’s.

Experience at Corrymeela

This summer I spent two weeks volunteering at Corrymeela, this is a brief report of my experience.

Corrymeela, one of the Missions supported by St. John’s, is situated in Ballycastle on the Northern Ireland coastline. It is an idyllic location providing a fantastic setting to promote the peace and reconciliation goals of the Corrymeela mission.

The Church Army

Thank you to everyone who donated money and supported the Lent Lunch. We raised £623 so that the Church Army can take some of the children from the deprived housing estates in London on a great day out this Summer. Nick Russell from the Church Army wrote “ your magnificent cheque arrived today. A proper thank you will follow but please assure everyone of my heartfelt thanks. This will make a huge difference! God bless you and thank you for all you do for Church Army and us in Greenwich Borough

Our children in Crowthorne take treats and holidays for granted but when life is about barely surviving, a day out at the seaside away from the problems of the estate is something really special.

Thank you to GlorEE for entertaining us before lunch and the Missions Committee would like to say a big thank you for making a difference in children’s lives.

Gini Cope

Parish representative for the Church Army

Two-wheeled tractor for Dayspring School

On Sunday, 3rd March we had the Lent lunch at which we continued to raise money for the Two-wheeled tractor for Dayspring Elementary School in Jinja so that the ground around the school can be cultivated to produce crops to feed the children.  The lunch raised £742, which with the money from the Christmas Giving Tree makes a total of over £1,000.  Thank you to everyone in the congregation who attended the lunch and made a contribution to this.

In order to raise the balance of the money towards the tractor (£1,500) Molly Papworth is doing a sponsored journey to York and back using her older Person’s Bus Pass.   She already has sponsorship of over £500 with more to come, so that it may be possible to add a plough and possibly even a trailer for the tractor.  If you have not done so already, please consider sponsoring Molly.
