After 62 years as a Licensed Lay Minister (yes, 62 years!), Lewis Simmons is now going emeritus, that is retiring to honorary status. Lewis’ ministry has been exceptional, not only in length, but in his contribution to church life and faithfulness to Christ.

As a preacher, his sermons have been scholarly and fed his listeners with new insights. He has been involved in leading the Ministry of the Word at the 10am service and Evening Prayer. He has otherwise been involved in worship reading the lessons, leading intercessions and assisting with the chalice. For a long time, he used to organise the readers rota and act as a back up to the sacristy team. He carried out his other duties diligently, taking twice monthly services at the Homestead residential home until it closed recently. Lewis has served on the PCC and been a valued colleague at our weekly ministry meetings. On a more practical level, he has been an invaluable member of the Fabric Committee. On this front, he has saved the church thousands over the years with all the gadgets he has made and projects he has got involved with. There are so many reminders around church of Lewis’ work, for instance, the lights that come on when the doors are locked, enhancing security.

Lewis will continue to be involved in areas of church life that do not require a licence, as part of the ministry of all believers. However, this is an opportunity to express our deep gratitude to Lewis for his dedication and service as a LLM over all these years. Thank you Lewis!

Revd Dr Lisa Cornwell
